French Fries, Hailstorms, and Other Things I Didn’t Plan

Yesterday was supposed to be simple.

Which, in my life, is usually the first sign it won’t be.

It started with dinner.

Tater tot casserole. Easy. Predictable. Safe.

Except Kroger decided I didn’t need tater tots.

They substituted them with french fries… and just moved on with their day like that was a completely normal decision.

So I did what any reasonable, sleep-deprived, overcommitted mother would do.

I made the casserole anyway.

And when my family questioned it, I confidently informed them that

the french fries identify as tater tots.

And you know what?

It was better.

I accidentally improved a classic dish through pure grocery store betrayal.

Dinner was great. Everyone was happy. Maddison and Sebastian came over, we were all sitting around eating, talking, pretending like we had control over our lives.

And then the sky said,

“Cute.”

Out of nowhere…hail.

Not a gentle, aesthetic, “oh look at the weather” kind of rain.

No.

The aggressive, loud, “why does it sound like my house is being attacked?” kind.

At this point, I’m inside like a normal person.

But outside?

Kris.

Maddison, my 22-year-old, fully grown adult daughter. Hailey the captain of the guard leading the way down the highway to hail.

Lynnlee.

And Harper.

All running around the yard like it’s a once-in-a-lifetime snow event… except it’s literal ice falling from the sky.

Collecting hail.

Bringing it inside.

Throwing it at each other.

Like this is a completely acceptable indoor activity now.

I’m watching my adult daughter, who I raised, who I taught basic life skills,

out there with her dad and her little sisters like she just unlocked a core childhood memory she forgot she had.

And honestly?

I couldn’t even be mad.

Because for a second, they were all the same age.

Laughing. Running. Not worried about work, bills, responsibilities, or whether the french fries were supposed to be tater tots.

Just… happy.

Meanwhile, I’m inside thinking about:

Why Kris sprayed  the weeds before the rain

if my leftovers are about to disappear (they did)

and how this entire day somehow derailed itself in the best possible way

Tuesday chaos doesn’t always look like disaster.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • a dinner that wasn’t supposed to work… working
  • a storm that traps everyone in one place
  • and a yard full of people you love acting just a little bit feral

And if I’m being honest?

I’ll take that kind of chaos any day.

Survival Tip:

If the grocery store replaces your tater tots with french fries…

Don’t fight it.

Lean in.

Worst case? Dinner’s weird.

Best case? You accidentally create a new family favorite while your kids throw hail at each other like tiny, joyful lunatics.

About Me

HI, I’m Jacqueline, entrepreneur by trade, mama by heart, and writer by necessity. I run a company by day and a household by…well all the time. Somewhere between scheduling client calls and cleaning up juice box disasters, I decided to start this blog. Crumbs and Chaos is my love letter to the mess, the loud, sticky and beautiful that comes from raising a big family while building a business. It’s where the professional world and the parenting trenches collide. Where the invisible hero can be seen and where a little grace can be cooked up.
